3 Questions to Ask Your NY Landlord before Moving In!

And that’s why we can tell you that it’s always a good idea to ask plenty of questions upfront, before making the down payment. This will help ensure that you and your property manager are both on the same page.

Here are a few questions your landlord will actually appreciate you asking:

1. What’s included in the rent?

Here at Nelson Management, all of our tenants are responsible for the utilities—these need to be paid separately. And in some buildings, residents are responsible for heat and hot water.

However, rental payments are different for each of the  apartment buildings and residences, so make sure you know exactly how much will be payable each month in rent. Also, ask us if the internet, cable and water bills might be included!

2. How are repairs handled?

Make sure you have the contact details for your building’s Mr. Fixit! In some cases, it may be your building’s on-site property manager or superintendent; in other cases, there may be head office number that you can call for quick fix and maintenance services.

3. Can I paint the walls and decorate the apartment?

Some of our multi-family residential buildings allow tenants to paint, but please make sure to ask. It is also highly advisable to ask if your apartment is cleared for using nails and tacks, etc. before you put up wall hangings.
